Syllabus for P.G. Entrance in Home Science

Unit I Fundamental of Food & Nutrition
Concept of nutrition, Food and its functions, Composition and nutritive value of different foods and food products, Macro and micro nutrients, Cooking methods, Improving nutritional quality of foods by different methods.
Food Microbiology, Hygiene & Situation:
History of food microbiology, Sterilization, Pasteurization, Fermentation occurrence, morphology and economic importance of different micro organisms. Control of micro organisms in food by different methods. Bacteriological analysis of milk, Water and air. Food borne infections, Sanitation and hygiene in foods, Food spoilage and safety.

Unit – II Nutritional Management in Health and Disease.
Health and Nutrition, Energy requirement, Meal planning, Diet planning throughout life cycle. Diet therapy, Modification of diet for therapeutic purposes. Nutritional management in common ailments. Parenteral nutrition.
Community Nutrition:-
Concept, scope, nutritional status assessment and surveillance. Direct nutritional assessment of human groups. Diet surveys- Need, importance and methods. Secondary sources of community health data. Nutritional problems of the community. Schemes and programmes to combat them. Hazards in community health surveillance – system, prevention of malnutrition.

Unit – III Maternal and Child Nutrition
Nutrition for pregnancy, Lactation, Infancy, pre-school and school going children. Management of preterm infants, Low birth weight infants. Downward spiral of malnutrition and infection, Acute respiratory infection. Diarrhoea
Nutritional Biochemistry
Introduction, Carbohydrates, lipids, Proteins, Enzymes, Molecular aspects of transport. Introduction to genetic Control. Vitamins, Minerals and water.

Unit-IV Basic Introduction to Textile Terminology and its origin.
Knitting Fabrics, Consumer Law of Protection, Advertisement in Textile Trade, Family Clothing, Equipments and Supplies used in Clothing, Construction and their maintenance, History of Traditional Costumes in India, Clothing Construction and preparation of Fabrics, Fitting Problems and their Remedies, Laying out Pattern on Fabric Latest trends in Production of Ready to Wear Garments.

Unit – V Introduction to laundry process and their application.
Dry washing, Equipment and materials, Reagents, Water, Soap and Detergent, Manufacture of Soaps by Saponification Process, Bleaches, Additives and Stiffening Agents, Additives used in Laundry, Latest additives available in the market, Stiffening Agents, Stain Removing, Disinfection of Clothes and Household Linen, Essentials of Children Clothing, Factors Affecting Selection of Clothing, Clothing for new born, creeping age, infants, pre-schools, elementary school children, pre-adolescents and adolescents, Good dressing habits.

Unit – XII Residential space design and furnishing
Family housing needs and house planning, landscape planning and financial considerations, furniture and selection of furniture for comfort, furnishing fabrics and accessories and their role in interiors.
Ecology and environment
Land, water, forests, air, energy, habitat, population, environmental education, environmental protection, national and international agencies for safeguarding ecology and environment.

Unit – XIII Social Structures and Systems
