Students of the University of Kashmir, who were protesting against the visit of Congress scion Rahul Gandhi to the varsity, have been locked inside the Department of Law, sources say.
Witnesses say students belonging to the various departments tried to take out a march "against the politicization of the university" from the Law department, but a posse of government forces stopped them and locked the department.
Some managed to escape but were not allowed to move out from the garden of the department, witnesses added.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi along with India corporate is to attend a functioning at the varsity today.
The banned students' group- Kashmir University Students Union- Thursday while opposing the visit of Congress scion Rahul Gandhi to the varsity had said "roping in big-wigs of Indian corporate for an apparently economic agenda is nothing but a facade aimed at stamping Indian hegemony".
It had called for protests against the event.
A group of students were protesting outside the Alama Iqbal University today. "Students were raising slogans: Rahul Gandhi go back," witnesses said.
In a press statement issued here, the banned group said: "Once again the university authorities have presented the institution on a platter for the Indian polity to further their imperialist agenda."
"Considering the disputed nature of Kashmir, any kind of investment by Indian business community seems beyond prudence. Also economic offerings cannot satiate the political aspirations of Kashmiris in general and Kashmiri youth in particular. Visit of Indian industrialists should be of academic nature and not political and propagandist," the group, whose offices were leveled during nocturnal raids in 2010, said.
The group accused the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Talat Ahmad of being hypocritical in his assertion that no politics will be allowed on campus.
Details emerging.
